Desde hace ya varios años comencé la aventura de tener una página web y un blog en ella: Travesías. De ese modo podía compartir con muchos amigos, conocidos, compañeros de ruta cercanos y lejanos muchos intereses y búsquedas comunes. Hoy ese medio me resulta insuficiente y tratando de estar más cerca y construir un diálogo más fluido he decidido publicar este newsletter para acercarles las novedades y también para que ustedes me puedan enviar textos, fotos, ideas en cualquier formato adecuado a este medio que quieran compartir y difundir.

Durante mucho tiempo la ciencia intentó sin éxito explicar la extraordinaria capacidad humana de comprender lo que los otros hacen y sienten, de entender las intenciones de los demás y reaccionar de manera adecuada a los actos ajenos. El descubrimiento de las neuronas espejo inició una revolución en nuestra comprensión del modo en que al interactuar con los demás usamos el cuerpo -los gestos, las expresiones, las posturas corporales- para comunicar nuestras intenciones y nuestros sentimientos. Es precisamente gracias a las neuronas espejo que se puede crear un puente entre uno y los otros y volver así posible el desarrollo de la cultura y de la sociedad: son ellas las que explican la imitación y la empatía. Del mismo modo, un déficit en las neuronas espejo puede ser responsable de varios e importantes síntomas del autismo: los problemas sociales, motores y de lenguaje.

Médico graduado en la Universidad La Sapienza, en Roma, Marco Iacoboni hizo una residencia en neurología y obtuvo un doctorado en neurociencia en la misma casa de estudios. En 1993 se trasladó a California. Ha sido investigador de posgrado, investigador asistente y profesor en la Universidad de California en Los Ángeles (UCLA). Actualmente es director del Laboratorio de Estimulación Magnética Transcraneal en el Ahmanson-Lovelace Brain Mapping Center, y profesor del Departamento de Psiquiatría y Ciencias del Comportamiento en el Instituto Neuropsiquiátrico de la Escuela de Medicina de la UCLA. Marco Iacoboni integra el comité editorial de varias publicaciones científicas, tales como 'NeuroImage', 'Interaction Studies', 'Social Neuroscience' y 'Open Medical Imaging Journal'. Ha obtenido numerosos premios y reconocimientos internacionales, entre ellos la medalla Fronteras de la Ciencia (2000).
Iacoboni es autor de más de setenta escritos científicos y más de treinta capítulos en libros colectivos. Sus áreas actuales de investigación incluyen la integración sensomotriz, el mapeo estímulo-respuesta, las bases neurológicas del comportamiento social, la imitación y la empatía. Ésta es su primera publicación traducida a nuestro idioma.
